Sacred Pages to Sacred Art

ReNew Sculptures

This project was born out of a desire to bridge the gap between spiritual reverence and ecological responsibility.

Our focus is on creating eco friendly sculptures and artworks from spiritual literature using only non-toxic materials, thereby honouring their sacred content, while contributing to a greener church.

Beauty of the Word now in texture

Christian literature such as - Bible Diaries and The Word Among Us - has been a long cherished presence in our homes. These publications enrich us spiritually, but with new editions printed regularly, we often find ourselves with large stacks of these sacred texts, many of us reluctantly sell them to recyclers, uneasy about where they might end up.

This raises an important question : Can we recycle such literature in ways that preserve reverence and respect? The answer is a joyful yes.

During my search for meaning back in 2019, I was led to the Eco Ambassadors course, organized by the Archdiocese Office Of Environment, Mumbai. This program was transformative, it opened my eyes to the urgency of the environment crisis, deepened my appreciation for the Church's environment mission, and introduced me to the Laudato Si', It was then that I knew my vocation as a designer was to create products that heal rather than harm.

Inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical the Laudato Si', the initiative began when a fellow community member expressed concern over the disrespectful reuse of spiritual pages - sometimes even as packaging for roadside snacks. As a product designer with a deep commitment to sustainability, I felt compelled to find a solution. What followed was a long process of experimentation and research, to develop durable, aesthetic, ecofriendly products ultimately leading to the creation of ReNew Sculptures.

Our work draws inspiration from traditional Catholic Art - such as the Pieta, while also creating new pieces rooted in Scripture. In this way, the words that once nourished our faith in print now continue to inspire through form, texture and beauty.

One of the most humbling moments of this journey was presenting a crucifix - crafted entirely from recycled spiritual literature to Cardinal Oswald Gracious during our Parish feast at my home parish of Our Lady of Lourdes Malad West.

We have been fortunate to experience many opportunities over the years, including ;

The enthusiastic support we receive from people of all ages fills our hearts with hope.

Together, we can create a positive impact on the environment.
