The Pieta
ReNew Sculptures
Mural style artwork from used spiritual literature.
Luke 2:33–35
“And a sword will pierce your own soul too”
The Pietà, meaning “Pity” or “Compassion,” portrays Mary sorrowfully holding the lifeless body of her Son. This mural recreates Michelangelo’s first great masterpiece, carved from a single block of marble in 1500.
It symbolizes selfless love and compassionate duty embodied by the Blessed Mother.
The scene recalls Simeon’s prophecy: “And a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:33–35). The same Child she once cradled is now broken and crucified, resting once more in her arms. With tender sorrow, Mary accepts her Son’s body, remembering His words: “The Son of Man will be handed over… and raised on the third day” (Matthew 17:22–23). Her love overcomes fear as she fulfills her duty with quiet sacrifice, mirroring His own. The lifeless Christ across her lap embodies ultimate obedience and love—blood poured out in perfect, self-emptying devotion.
